S. James (Jimmie) Brown was born in London and educated at the Haberdashers' Aske's School, Hampstead, later studying and teaching at the Heatherley School of Fine Art. Unable to serve through ill health, he became Associate Editor of Higham's Magazine in 1916. With his wife, Sybil, sister-in-law, Yvonne Creagh Coen, and daughter, also named Yvonne (donor), he lived at Golders Green, London, throughout most of the First World War. S.
